Washing machines are essential household items. But with seemingly unlimited options and progressions in technology, how do you choose the right machine and what features should you expect?

We recently replaced our top-loader washing machine and after plenty of research, analysis of product reviews, and testing of the final chosen product (of course!); we thought we would share our opinion of the machine that does it all.

We have taken the hard work of choosing out of the equation - our top pick is the Fisher & Paykel WH8060F1 8KG Front Load washing machine. This machine has features that tick every box; with additional supporting features we never thought we needed (but now can’t live without!).

Some of the top features are listed below, but regardless of which machine you choose, this guide provides the ‘gold standard’ and you should expect nothing less from your new purchase (you can thank us later!).

It looks pretty – but is it brainy?

We all know it looks the goods (I mean come on, that’s a pretty sleek looking machine right?!). But does the technology stack up? With over 75 years of laundry experience, Fisher and Paykel are considered leaders in washing machine innovation. They continue to push boundaries and have adapted SmartDrive™ technology from top to front loaders for a quieter, more reliable and efficient wash.

It’s a fancy name, but what does SmartDrive™ actually do? Basically, electronic feedback from the direct drive motor is used to intelligently adjust the wash action to deliver the perfect balance of temperature, detergent and motion to avoid damage to garments.

If you are anything like me, clothes are an investment; and the gentle changes in drum speed and direction help remove and reduce fabric wear and tear traditionally experienced with front loaders. That earns a big tick of approval from me any day.

Wash Cycles

A generous total of 13 pre-programmed wash cycles have been included, helping to take the guesswork out of washing.

Before you think ‘ughhh, sounds like too many complicated options’, I can confirm the control panel is extremely user friendly, even for a technophobe like me! Each wash cycle is uniquely tailored for delicates through to durables and everything in between to ensure even the toughest soiled clothes are washed as good as new every time.

Typically, front loaders are notorious for long wash cycles and we were hesitant to change from a top loader for this reason. However Fisher & Paykel have solved this issue, with 9 of the 13 cycles taking less than 1 hour, the shortest wash programme taking just 15 minutes!

Add Garment Function

Oh how I love this function! The add garment feature is something we didn’t know we needed but now absolutely adore.

It borrows the concept from traditional top loaders; the feature lets you load forgotten clothes, even after the cycle has begun. Super handy when you need to add that last minute item, or if you have a mini heart attack and need to rescue your earphones or mobile phone forgotten in a pocket from impending doom (water damage).

Time Delay Feature

The machine has a time delay feature so you can literally set and forget. We use this feature all the time to accommodate our busy lifestyle.

Simply set the wash cycle to finish just before you come home from work to ensure your clothes don’t sit in the machine all day long before hanging them out to dry. This avoids stale smelling clothes and the hassle of re-washing. Another winning feature in our books!

Friendly on the Environment and your Hip Pocket

Another loveable feature is the 4 star energy rating and 5 star water rating. Automatic water level sensors detect the size of each wash and adjust the water level to suit, rather than filling to a predetermined level. This supports those aiming for a more environmentally friendly household with the added bonus of reduced running costs.

It’s a win-win situation for planet earth and your bank balance. Couple that with a 10-year direct drive motor warranty, you can’t go wrong!

I could go on for quite a while longer about the other awesome features such as the handy interior light, adjustable spin speeds, and the soak and tumble option for superior stain removal.
